can't access database - unknown server

Postby GabeTheKId » Mon Sep 01, 2008 9:11 pm

So I try opening PT3 and I can't access the stats or anything and the message I get when trying to import is "unable to begin feeder import process. Reason: Unable to log in to database (PT3.2008...) Reason: Could not translate host name "local host" to address. Unknown server error"

So I tried searching the forums and as a result went to Event Viewer (I think that's what it's called) to try to find any errors with Postgre...here is the most recent error: "Could not write log file: Bad file descriptor".

I don't know if that 2nd part is going to be helpful because the date on that error dates back a few months, but it said in the main lobby of Event Viewer that this error occured within the hour, so I'm not sure what that's about.

Please help ASAP, this is really frustrating.

localhost is one word - make sure you don't have a space in it.

Did you install PT3 with postgres? Did the install complete successfully?

What do you mean make sure it's one word? I was just writing that from memory because I'm on a different computer, so it's very possible that it was actually one word and I mis-remembered it. Or do you mean that it's possible that it was two words on the computer and I have to change that? I'm not sure what you mean there...

As for the installation of PT3, I'm pretty sure I installed it with postgres...I installed it a while ago and it was working fine with regards to this issue. This is the first time that it happened. And the install, as far as I know, did complete successfully because I had no probelms with this in the past (had probelms with HUD and other issues but not this).

Any clue as to what this might be? Also, is there a way to check if I installed PT3 with postgres?

thanks,
Gabe

I meant that localhost is always be one word and will be that way on your computer, but if it is entered in PT3 anywhere with a space it won't work. If it was from memory, it was probably one word, and is unlikely to be the issue.
Check it, though. Open DAtabase -> Database Management and make sure localhost is one work in the Database Info column.

I assume this is all on one computer? You're not running postgres on a networked computer?
Do you have any postgres processes running if you look in Task Manager -> Processes?
Is the database name correct in the error message?
