files in PT3/Data folder with .pte extension?

as i've posted and trouble ticketed previously, installing beta 16 broke my HUD. the HUD won't work even after i reinstalled beta 15, which was previously working perfectly for me. i was wondering if maybe the cache created by beta 16 was mucking up the process, so i looked in the PT3 folder to see if the cache file was there (like it is in PAH). i didn't see the cache file, but i did notice two files with weird extensions:

Filters.xml.pte
Stats.xml.pte

hmmm. google seems to indicate that these files are proprietary for a completely unrelated program, so i'll change them to pt3 and see what happens.

the question remains: why did the installer create files with this extension, and what are they supposed to be/do?

I don't know exactly what those files are for, but you shouldn't randomly change file extensions - you'll break something! Although I suspect in this case you will just remove the list of filters/stats stored, and PT3 will recreate default lists.
