Database Login

Postby Alan914 » Thu Jun 26, 2008 11:36 pm

I am running v3.00 beta 13 data everything worked fine until yesterday I got the message below and I have tried the solution in FAQs Start -> Programs -> Postgres -> Start Service. If this doesn't help, try a reboot.
This did not fix the problem. What to next ??? Alan.

unable to login to database (PT3_xxxx_xx_xx_xxxxxx) - reason:could not connect to server:connection refused(0x0000274D/10061) Is the server running on host "localhost" and accepting TCPT/IP connection on port 5432?
First thing to try is to restart the postgres service.

You are going to have to look at your Event Log in order to figure out what the error is.

Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer

Find the entries that show postgres failing and past them to this thread.

search across your hard-drives (including system & hidden-files) for any of these - postmaster.pid's - then wack 'em...

post back your postgresql.conf for starters because it sounds like you've got the postgres debugger running...

if the postgres service is timing out trying to start, that may indicate a permissions problem that another piece of software has set on a file folder or a registry key that is stopping the postgres service get going.

Get procmon (from sysinternals), restart the postmaster, when it gets to the error, don't dismiss the dialog box, launch procmon, make a note of the postgres process ID (PID) from windows task manager, filter the procmon to this PID, scroll down to the bottom and look for any folders/registry keys this PID is trying to access.

The path and result columns in procmon should give you the clue as to the offending item...

If it turns out to be the path of a completely different app, this is the culprit that's holding the lock that's preventing postgres from starting - that app needs to be disabled, uninstalled or updated so it does not conflict with the postgres service.

# -----------------------------
# PostgreSQL configuration file
# -----------------------------
#
# This file consists of lines of the form:
#
# name = value
#
# (The "=" is optional.) Whitespace may be used. Comments are introduced with
# "#" anywhere on a line. The complete list of parameter names and allowed
# values can be found in the PostgreSQL documentation.
#
# The commented-out settings shown in this file represent the default values.
# Re-commenting a setting is NOT sufficient to revert it to the default value;
# you need to reload the server.
#
# This file is read on server startup and when the server receives a SIGHUP
# signal. If you edit the file on a running system, you have to SIGHUP the
# server for the changes to take effect, or use "pg_ctl reload". Some
# parameters, which are marked below, require a server shutdown and restart to
# take effect.
#
# Any parameter can also be given as a command-line option to the server, e.g.,
# "postgres -c log_connections=on". Some paramters can be changed at run time
# with the "SET" SQL command.
#
