Cluster Process Stuck - What Now?

Postby oracle3001 » Tue Jul 29, 2008 1:54 pm

I imported about 100k hands this morning, and left cluster / analyze on completion ticked. The import finished after a few minutes, but the clustering process has now been running for over 9 hrs The last time I clustered was a couple of days ago, and it took 2-3hrs. I haven't changed anything in the meantime, was using beta 15 both times etc.

Can I just kill PT3 using Task Manager, as it has clearly got stuck as there is no way a DB that is 100k hands larger (2.5 mill total) than a couple of days ago should take 3+ times to cluster.

Edit:- Just checked the log and it is still doing sql operations, but this is crazy. 2.5 mill hand DB taking 9 hrs to cluster and still not finished. And why didn't it take 9hrs last time? Seems like there is a bug there somewhere.

Hi,

this seems to be a very old thread and the problem is probably solved - but I have the same one.. I just built a new DB importing a lot of hands last night (~1.8 mill in about 6 hrs) and now the clustering process is already working for 4 hrs. My Task Manager tells me that 'postgres.exe' and 'pokertracker.exe' are still working (PGS: 1-3% CPU usage ; PT: 0-2% CPU usage) and my HDD is also working.
Is it usual that it takes that much time? Is it actually neccessary to cluster the DB (large performance improvements? less space used?)?
I did the same yesterday and killed PT after ~2 hrs, but it was important to use the HUD with the large DB so I decided to reimport to make sure that the Database is okay..

Regards

Edit: I'm using Beta 15

The cluster process can take a while, hard to say how long since it depends a lot on the computer. It generally speeds up things and should be done after big imports. You can also have a look at the Performance Tuning PostgreSQL and the Performance Tuning Hard Drives guides as that might speed these things up as well.

The clustering has just finished now - I was just worried because it took THAT much time.. almost 5 hrs now - nearly as long as the import..

Thank you

Luckily you don't have to do it so often :), also do check out the guides that I mentioned as they can give quite a nice performance boost.
