How to Set Default Hand Range Model in the Equity Calculator

Postby BrianChina » Tue Oct 20, 2020 4:17 am

Hi PT4, I've looked everywhere I can think of and I can't find any way to change the default Hand Range model from Sklansky-Karlson in the Equity Calculator.  After I change it it reverts back to the SK the next time I invoke it.  My research indicates this is a flawed model.

I use the equity calculator frequently in reviewing my tournaments and it is irritating, wasteful of my time, and prone to forgetfulness to have to continually change the model as I step through hands and streets.  I like the "Hand vs. 3 Randoms" model the best but I'm sure there might be others who might like to generate their own model.  Is there a way to permanently set it so I don't have to continually change this field?

Can you look into this for me please?

For those who might be interested about why I say this is a flawed model the thread on "Two Plus Two" by "grinder" from SitNGo Wizard fame is a good summary of the similar issue he had with this model.

There isn't a method to set a default model at this time but you could edit the existing C:\Program Files (x86)\PokerTracker 4\Data\HandRange\Holdem\Models\Sklansky-Karlson.xml file with your custom rankings. I'd also create a backup of that file as it will reset to default each time you update PokerTracker 4 to a new version.

Thanks Flag...a little vague, at least to my easily confused mind...by " edit the existing C:\Program Files (x86)\PokerTracker 4\Data\HandRange\Holdem\Models\Sklansky-Karlson.xml file" I took it to mean to swap (rename) the files.  I did that and it made no difference although I re-initialized PT4 and even rebooted to make sure there wasn't any artifact or obscure process left running or in memory with the old data.

While investigating I opened the files and found each has it own model name or identifier in the second line of text corresponding to its respective file name (model).  For example, the first two lines of text in the original Sklansky-Karlson.xml file is this:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
-<PokerTracker lock="true" color="#979700" name="Sklansky-Karlson" game="Holdem" rversion="1.1" filetype="rangemodel" version="APP_VERSION">

Notice the contents of "name=" in the second line.

So what I found is that the whole sequence of instructions to change the default range model is actually two steps with a third additional one to workaround a silly Win10 security roadblock:

1-Swap (rename) the two file names to change the range model data
2-Change the name of the model in the "name =" field to match the name of the file.
3-Note this additional step.  Win10 security wouldn't allow me to edit the files in their original directory and displayed an administrator required error message (even though as the Win10 installer I was already the admin and it had already allowed me to rename the files and even delete them)...go figure.  I had to copy them to an interim directory, such as my "Documents" directory, edit them there, and then copy them back to the PT4 directory, overwriting the original ones (which Win10 security did allow me to do, fortunately!).

After doing all these steps the runtime range model default was changed or swapped to the model I wanted as the default rather than the standard SK model.

Thanks for the original germ of the solution.  It took me the long way around to get there but I managed it.
